DuraCloud + DSpace@MIT: Easy Cloud Access for Collection Managers and Curators

Ithaca, NY How, exactly, do collections of digital resources get parked in a "cloud"? There's  a lot of chatter about cloud storage particularly among higher education IT groups looking to save money on data storage [1], but for those accustomed to hands-on hard drives and racks of processors the idea of looking for sturdy digital back-up and customized services from something as ephemeral-sounding as a "cloud" does not compute.

A 19th Century View of Shakespeare Through A Djatoka Viewer and DuraCloud

Ithaca, NY Before continuous tone photography, and way before there were instant digital capture devices for recording and processing digital images, there were engravings. The process of using sharp tools (gravers) to incise an image on a metal or glass plate so that a reverse print of that image could be created by spreading ink on the plate and pressing paper into the inked design is known as engraving. This method of recording images was used extensively in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to illustrate the news stories of the day.

For Your Repository Browsing Pleasure: “Graphic Novels and Comic Books”

Ithaca, NY Comic books and graphic novels–picture books for adults–have come a long way. Although “Archie” comic books of the 1950s era were reflections of current popular culture themes, newer varieties are complex blends of social commentary and evocative graphic representations that speak volumes using words and pictures to make the whole truly greater than the sum of its parts.

For Your Repository Browsing Pleasure: “Papyrology Resources”

Ithaca NY Some materials that are preserved online are facsimiles of fragile paper book “objects” that were formerly only available by special in-person request. They often appeared along with a pair of white gloves so that you could examine them. Papyrus texts are an example of ancient objects that are now available digitally from libraries and archives allowing researchers greater access to these significant scholarly resources.
