A Busy Summer for DSpace — GSoC & DSpace 1.7 updates

The summer is always a great time to sit back, relax, and put your feet up. But this summer, the DSpace developers have been hard at work (though, we’ve also taken our respective relaxation time). We’ve been making early preparations for the upcoming DSpace 1.7 release and mentoring four successful student projects during the 2010 Google Summer of Code (GSoC).

US National Learning Registry Announced to Increase Access to Online Educational Content

Ithaca, NY Making sure that the wealth of digital learning and information resources that are now freely available on the Web reach teachers, students and families when and where they need them is a priority in the US and around the world. In a major step forward towards meeting this goal The US Secretary of Education, the Chairman of the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution announced the US National Learning Registry.

DuraSpace recommends DSpace & Fedora Integration initiative

At Open Repositories 2010, DuraSpace has recommended that the DSpace and Fedora communities investigate strategies to allow DSpace software to run “on top of” the Fedora platform. The goal of the initiative would be to add an option to install the DSpace application with “Fedora Inside”.

DSpace 1.6.2 Release will fix key issues in 1.6.1

The DSpace Developers would like to announce the release schedule for DSpace 1.6.2, which resolves an few key issues in 1.6.1.
DSpace 1.6.2 is scheduled for public release on Wednesday, June 16, 2010.
DSpace 1.6.2 is a bug-fix release which will resolve two key issues found within 1.6.1. This release will not introduce any new features.

DSpace 1.7.0 Release Coordinator Announced

The DSpace Developers are proud to announce our Release Coordinator for the DSpace 1.7.0 release later this year.
Peter Dietz, a DSpace Committer from Ohio State University Libraries, has volunteered to coordinate our next major release!

Exploring Integration of DSpace and Fedora

Ithaca, NY At OR10, the Fifth Annual International Open Repositories Conference (July 6-9, 2010, Madrid), DuraSpace will recommend that the DSpace community begin to work more closely with the Fedora community to allow DSpace software to run “on top of” the Fedora platform. Essentially, this would mean that the DSpace application would have an option to install it with “Fedora Inside.”
